It's rare I find a reason to bitch and complain about the TSA, you know, the wanna-be Federal officers who make sure your 10 oz. Starbucks you paid dearly for does not go through security. This latest story I read was sometime last week and the headlines says, "TSA's 'behavior detection' leads to few arrests. No! Really?
The cold hard fact, "Fewer than 1% of airline passengers singled out at airports for suspicious behavior are arrested," states the article. More numbers to dazzle you, "more than 160,000 people in airports receiving scrutiny, such as a pat-down search or a brief interview. That has resulted in 1,266 arrests, often on charges of carrying drugs or fake IDs," the TSA said.
Wow! All this increased security at US airports and what has it really done in terms of REAL airline safety? Very little...very little at all. ""That's an awful lot of people being pulled aside and inconvenienced...I think it's a sham. We have no evidence it works," said Carnegie Mellon scientist Stephen Fienberg.
The TSA and DHS still cannot get airport security right! Wonder what sort of attack it will be next that gets by those watchdogs of the security checkpoint. I can tell you one thing when (not if) they make it through the checkpoint there will be further restrictions on what can be carried on an airplane.
Chances are the next attack will come from the air freight side of airline operations, where very little is checked before it is accepted and loaded onto an aircraft. That should scare the hell out of you more than some wannabe confiscating your coffee or toothpaste.
"The TSA has not publicly said if it has caught a terrorist through the program. The agency says that some who are arrested, particularly on fake ID charges, may be scouting an airport for a possible attack." Of course not! And just how much did the government invest into increase airline security? Remember that $3 9/11 charge or whatever the hell they call it. TSA. DHS. Take a look at international airports outside the US and see how it SHOULD be done. |
